Sgt.Sylvia Durand is the first member of any Armed Forces in the World, to have her surgery approved, and paid for by the Government, and the Military. For a time, she lived under a cloud of controversy, but she remained steadfast to her ideals, and had her surgery which was performed by Dr. Y. Menard August 1999, in Montreal.
Cynthia Cousens is the first transsexual who's ever served on the Toronto Police force. Cynthia spent most of her 28 years with Toronto's 14 Division, one of the toughest, busiest precincts. Most of her career was spent in uniform, or on the force's mounted and traffic units and earned 26 service commendations and a 1998 chief of police award.
Cynthia's Gender Reassignment Surgery happened on August 28 2001 and she has received the necessary legal documents to complete all personal identity and gender changes.
Today, Cynthia is legally a Woman. After her recovery, she resumed her community work with both the Ottawa Police Service GLBT Community Liaison Committee, and Victim Assistance Services (Ottawa-Carleton)VASOC. She hopes to continue teaching TS/TG issues to other police services across Ontario and Canada.
