"I can only imagine what it must be like to feel you have lived a lie, have the courage to change your life and then be abused on every level because of it. I can't imagine the strength it would take to endure it."

Hayley Patterson/Cropper is a character played by Julie Hesmondhalgh on the popular Granada TV's programme Coronation Street.

Hayley Cropper (originally Hayley Anne Patterson) first appeared in the show as a nerdy, shy employee at Freshcos. A bit of a thorn in Manager Curly Watts' side, Curly pawned her off on Alma Baldwin. Hayley, for one, was glad of a chance at friendship, and even though she tried a bit too hard in the beginning, she and Alma became good friends.

It was through Alma that Hayley eventually met Roy Cropper (owner of Roy's Rolls). Here, she felt she had found a soul mate, as Roy, too, was an intelligent, shy, socially awkward individual. They began dating (even if neither of them new it at the time), and eventually came to care for each other quite deeply. Their relationship almost ended when Hayley confided her greatest secret to Roy: she is a transsexual. Eventually, Roy came to grips with this bit of news, and the two became even closer.

In 1999, Roy and Hayley were married by a progressive minister. While legally unable to wed, Hayley had her last name changed to Cropper, a surprise gift to her new husband. Hayley is currently employed as a machine operater at Underworld.

Julie Hesmondhalgh

Julie Hesmondhalgh, the actress who plays Hayley, was a controversial choice; a female to play the part of a transsexual woman. But she turned out to be absolutely perfect in the role, lending it a vulnerability and innocence that charmed Britian and eventually the rest of the world. Haley has become a role model and spokeswoman for Transgendered Communities everywhere.

Slowly, but surely, the public fell in love with the character Hayley at the same time as Roy Cropper, because of WHO she was, not WHAT she was.

Julie also became highly motived and educated about the condition and it's ramifications, and started to highlight transsexual issues when being interviewed.
